episode 24: when being selfless becomes a selfish act
This episode, the second in a series on "help", focuses on our motivations to help other people, to give gifts, to "give back" to the community, and in general, to put ourselves out there for the benefit of others.
But - in putting ourselves out there, I propose that we ask ourselves: are we doing this act of goodness, of selflessness, TRULY for the people on the receiving end, or is there another motivation?
In giving "selflessly," it's vitally important to make sure that the motivations are pure. We explore these ideas in this episode - kind of a heavy topic! - in order to not become a casualty of our own "giving." I know that in my own past I’ve fallen into this pitfall, including on a huge fundraising run to help folks suffering from food insecurity, when I myself could barely afford my own groceries. Listen here for some strategies to learn when it’s the right time to offer help, or to simply dial back to help yourself first.
